This section, on the EuroVelo 6 cycle route, runs beside the Canal du Centre. It crosses Southern Burgundy, from Chalon to Digoin, from Saône to Loire. The pretty route is dotted with characterful towns, vineyards and hills where cattle graze. As well as the natural and cultural riches, the industrial past is fascinating here. This section is mainly along greenways, with some stretches on roads and some slopes. Ideal to do in 3 to 4 days.

  • Eurovelo 6, from Chalon-sur-Saône to Santenay

    Eurovelo 6, from Chalon-sur-Saône to Santenay [28 km]

    This EuroVelo 6 stage takes you from Chalon to the Canal du Centre which then heads southwest to meet the Loire. This stage is especially peaceful and pleasant, running beside a canal enjoyed by fishermen and boating holiday-makers making for the Loire port of Digoin. The cycling is easy, exclusively on greenways, except as you leave town.

  • Santenay / St-Léger-sur-Dheune

    Santenay / St-Léger-sur-Dheune [8 km]

    This EuroVelo 6 stage in Burgundy starts at Chalon, then takes you along the Canal du Centre, leading towards the Loire River. This stage is particularly peaceful and enjoyable, taking you along a canal appreciated by anglers and pleasure craft. The cycle route is easy, being almost entirely on greenways, except for leaving Chalon.

    St-Léger-sur-Dheune / Montchanin [25 km]

    This EuroVelo 6 stage takes you along a provisional cycle route through pretty Burgundian hills. Note that the way is along quite steep little roads and should only be tackled by experienced cyclists. You can avoid this difficulty by taking the train from Chagny to Montchanin.

  • Montchanin / Montceau-les-Mines

    Montchanin / Montceau-les-Mines [12 km]

    This EuroVelo 6 stage is punctuated by many sites bearing witness to Southern Burgundy’s rich industrial past. The historic mining town of Montceau-les-Mines is a stop that proves both surprising and enjoyable. There isn’t a greenway set up along this stretch for the time being, but you take a calm small road beside the canal.

    La Bourgogne à vélo Véloroute de Montchanin à Etiveau [35.4 km]

    Parcours à la découverte de charmants villages aux maisons typiquement bourguignonnes. Les cadoles et les murgers (murs de pierres sèches) rythment les paysages sur une 1ère partie du parcours et témoignent ainsi du passé récent de l'activité de vigneron. Vous serez également sensible au cadre verdoyant de la vallée de la Guye, ou encore les vues sur la vallée du Puley à l'est, et à l'ouest sur Montchanin.

    Montceau-les-Mines / Palinges [21.5 km]

    This EuroVelo 6 stage in Burgundy meanders between the Canal du Centre and Bourbince River. You pass significant vestiges left from the mining and steel-making industries that long brought activity to the canal in times past. From Palinges, the atmosphere changes as you come to the Renaissance castle at Digoine. This stage is along roads.

    Palinges / Paray-le-Monial [16.5 km]

    Starting with the elegant Château de Digoine, this EuroVelo 6 stage crosses a part of Burgundy that takes you back in time, scattered with meadows where beautiful white Charolais cows graze. The route is along roads leading to the remarkable little pilgrimage town of Paray-le-Monial and to the canal-side greenway going on to the town of Digoin.

  • Paray-le-Monial / Digoin

    Paray-le-Monial / Digoin [16.5 km]

    This EuroVelo 6 stage in Burgundy provides an idyllic route from Paray-le-Monial to Digoin. A greenway meanders through utterly peaceful countryside, beside the Canal du Centre, used by pleasure craft. At Digoin, an ingenious canal-bridge crosses the Loire to join the Canal Latéral à la Loire running beside the mighty river. A very easy stage.
