Abbey of Besançon

The Dames Chanoinesses Abbey was founded in the 5th century by Saint Germain, the Bishop of Besançon.

The Dames Chanoinesses Abbey was founded in the 5th century by Saint Germain, the Bishop of Besançon. It accommodated nuns, the most aristocratic families and Odile, the blind daughter of Duke Aldaric of Alsace, who took refuge here. Built in a Neo-Roman style, the current abbey church is the work of architect Nicolas Nicole, and plays host to a cultural centre.
