The Canal du Centre

The Canal du Centre links the town of Chalon-sur-Saône to Digoin, the River Saône to the Loire, and thus the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean.

Industrial asset and leisure facility

The Canal du Centre links the town of Chalon-sur-Saône to Digoin, the River Saône to the Loire, and thus the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. This vital artery, built by Emiland Gauthey between 1783 and 1793, was the main driving force behind the region’s industrial development (mining, metallurgy, ceramics). With the decrease in commercial traffic, the Canal has become a place of leisure, a popular destination for pleasure-boaters, who come to enjoy the verdant countryside and vineyards of the Charolais, and to marvel at engineering masterpieces such as the Pont-Canal at Digoin.
